Today’s Bible passage is from chapter 1 of John’s Gospel… and today is a family day, so i’m sitting at the table surrounded by cutting and sticking materials from the girls, being distracted by requests to help apply glue, give advice on how to attach things in scrap books, and more… so its hard to focus (BTW- Mrs D is painting and generally being a creative wonder while I sit here, just in case you’re wondering).
I had a cunning plan to write about how wonderful it is to think of ourselves as Children of God (an idea contained within today’s passage) and make some connection to the joy of spending time as a family… but the reality is that its hard to concentrate on both things at the same time… maybe i’m not very good at multi-tasking, maybe i’m stuck with a dualistic spirituality (ooh- big word for a bank holiday…) where i struggle to bring together the spiritual and material things of life.
Anyway, the significant thought for today? That even though its difficult its really important to bring those things together- the spiritual and the material- that its really important to learn to read the Bible in the presence of a 3 yr old. And my justification for that thought? ‘The Word became flesh and made his home among us’- thats John 1 v14.
So the plan for the rest of the day is to go to the beach and play pirates, and maybe do some beach worship while we’re there…
